Actor & Politician Vijayakanth Died: Renowned Tamil actor and politician Vijayakanth, founder-leader of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazgam (DMDK), passed away in Chennai at the age of 71. Earlier in the day, the party announced via its official channels that Vijayakanth had been hospitalized and placed on ventilator support due to respiratory issues.
Vijayakanth, affectionately known as ‘Captain,’ had been admitted to MIOT Hospital in November after experiencing cough and throat pain. His health had been closely monitored by medical professionals for a period of 14 days. The actor-politician’s body has now been brought to his residence and will later be taken to the DMDK office.
Before venturing into politics, Vijayakanth enjoyed a successful career in the Tamil film industry, featuring in 154 movies. Notably, while serving in a leadership role at the Nadigar Sangam (South Indian Artistes’ Association), he introduced significant reforms to the South Indian film sector.
In 2005, Vijayakanth founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazgam, and the party contested in all assembly seats in 2006, securing 10 percent of the total vote share. However, only Vijayakanth emerged victorious among the party’s candidates. His contributions to both the entertainment and political realms have left a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s cultural and political landscape.
