Derek Fisher was born to his parents John and Annette Fisher in Little Rock, Arkansas. He completed his high school education at Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School and later attended the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He has four children with his ex-wife Candace Fisher, named Drew Fisher, Tatum Fisher, Chloe Fisher, and Marshall Fisher. Derek Fisher married his second wife, Gloria Govan, in 2021.

Derek Fisher started his professional basketball career in 1996 when he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the NBA draft.
