Matter Casting Open: Amazon has unveiled Matter Casting, an open alternative to the popular media casting features AirPlay and Chromecast, during its CES 2024 announcements. While AirPlay is limited to Apple’s platforms and Chromecast to Google’s Android, Matter Casting aims to bridge the gap by providing a universal solution.
In development since at least 2021, Matter Casting allows users to wirelessly transmit videos and related content from an app to a compatible display. Amazon is leading the charge in adopting this new protocol, making it available on its Fire TV-powered devices and the Prime Video app. Notably, this feature is currently accessible in the Prime Video app on both Android and iOS, with casting limited to the Echo Show 15 initially. However, support for additional devices is planned for a phased rollout.
Amazon’s collaboration with Panasonic announced at CES 2024, further extends Matter Casting compatibility to smart TVs powered by Amazon’s Fire TV operating system. Panasonic has introduced OLED TVs featuring Fire TV OS, ensuring Matter Casting support for a seamless user experience.
Currently, the Prime Video app is the primary supporter of Matter Casting, but other popular apps, including Plex, Pluto, Sling TV, Starz, and ZDF video apps, are expected to integrate the protocol soon. One notable advantage of Matter Casting is its open nature, allowing app developers and TV manufacturers to implement it in their devices without facing additional certification or royalty fees.
As Matter Casting gains momentum, it promises to enhance the casting experience by offering a versatile and inclusive solution for users across different platforms and devices.
